Yesterday afternoon I stopped for a cup of tea at the local overpriced coffee joint. As I handed over the $3.00 it occurred to me that I could buy a whole box of Twinings tea bags for the same price. But I digress. The point of this story is that the woman who took my order looked familiar. I glanced at her name badge, which read "Diane". That wasn't it, I thought. I was sure I knew her. Then it hit me: she was Donna Reed. Well not exactly, I mean Donna Reed is long dead now, this woman just resembled Donna Reed. It was her hairdo. As I stood waiting for my $3 cup of tea, I wondered why this woman was still wearing a hairdo from the 1950's. Then I realized, retro hair styles are back in fashion! So I felt compelled to create this post around retro-hairdos (sorry about the long set up). Here are a number of retro "way back" styles I found interesting:Above: "The Donna Reed Look"

I once tried a retro 'do for a luau. I was going for a sort of late '40s early '50s look, flower in the hair and all.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I couldn't get my hair to hold the style. Oh, it looked fine as long as I didn't leave the apartment, but as soon as I stepped outside the Gulf Coast humidity had its way with it and down it all fell. No more poofs and curls. Even the flower wilted.
I have no idea how those women did it. Shellac, I guess.
My Mom was for sure the dignified, Devoted and Doting type of hairstyle, although nothing like Joan Crawford...we were allowed to ONLY use wire hangers and our steaks were always tough and overdone instead of raw and chewy.
ReplyDeleteI think the Innocent, naive and and gullible styles can be pulled off today by someone with the right face and fashion (Think Christina Aguilara) but the others should stay in the 50's where they belong.
ReplyDeleteMy mom didn't fall into any of these. She's got very curly hair that was just...long. Every now and then she'd do the Cher thing and straighten it, but for the most part, we saw curls.
My mom wore the Hip, Sassy and Whimsical type hair. She was such a riot growing up. Fun post today!
ReplyDeleteMy mother was just about all of those, if not more. It was one thing I always "fancied in" when Mom would be getting ready to go out on the town. Never liked her beehive, though.

put my mom soemwhere between whimsical and tragically square. i do remember the wig phase too. i used to steal her flowing blonde wig nad put it on my little brother. hahahha

My mom went through so many phases... from the beehive, to the straight and turned up on the ends then to the curly perm. She now wears her hair simple, straight and turned under.

my mom was like sally fields in the movie Steel Magnolia's cept shorter hair. She kept that hair do for 40 years. Big brown football helmet. With about half a can of hair spray on it every day.

ReplyDeleteMy mom had the helmet hair, too. Then again, it was a wig since she lost all her hair due to alopecia around age 40.
ReplyDeleteWhat hairdo did my Mommie Dearest (<-HAHA)wear? Shoot man, I saw a picture of her from the 1960s were she looked like one of those mod girls in a Beatles video or Austin Powers movies. That was way cool!
ReplyDeleteModern and independent was my mom's WWII style, much little the Joan Crawford down style. Me, I'd just like to figure out a style and stick to it. I'm always changing just like Hillary.

My mom started as Independent and Practical and morphed right into Edith Bunker.
ReplyDeleteMy mom looked more like Edith Bunker too than any of these...I always wished she was more like Samantha Stevens..lmao.
ReplyDeleteMy mom was always an Audrey Hepburn type up until she quit dying her hair-- portraits of her from the mid-1950's to the early 1990's evoked comments of, "She looks just like Audrey Hepburn!"
