Excitement Backstage...
above: I started the day back stage, touring the benches where all the dogs were "staged" by breed. I had time to observe the dogs getting groomed, and last minute coaching refresher courses from their trainers. Some dogs were excited. Others were irritated by the other dogs barking. And some dogs decided it was all much ado about nothing and were quite happily sleeping amidst all the chaos of the day
above: this "Bouviers des Flandres" dog was happy with all the attention and excitement.
Junior Showmanship Preliminaries
One interesting feature of the afternoon was the Junior Showmanship Competition, an event where young handlers in training can learn the sport of showing dogs and be part of the Westminster Kennel Club.
above and below: the Junior handlers have a go at the competitions and test out their skills as up-and-coming professionals.
It was a great first day of the Westminster Show...I am already excitment about tomorrow's competition and am speculating the eventual Best In Show winner! Look for me on TV Tuesday night, I'll be sitting behind the judges!
Those lucky bitches! Beauty in motion. Great Dane is my dog.
ReplyDeleteI just read on CNN that Patty Hearst Shaw won best of breed with her French Bull Dog. I am so happy for her-- she looks beautiful and from now on when her name is mentioned with something I will say, "THE Patty Hearst Shaw? Whose French bull dog, Diva won best of breed at Westminister in 2008?!!!" Great pics!
ReplyDeleteThat Bouvier is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see how my favorite breed, English Springer Spaniel, fares. I love watching the show on TV.
ReplyDeletei am pulling for the beagle!
ReplyDeleteI have a Bouvier-- he's not show quality, he's just a dawg who hangs around the house. Not much of a guard animal. I can walk up on him while he is sleeping and practically trip over him and he startles up and barks a scolding at me. I showed him your picture, "This is a real dog!" He rolled on his back for a tummy scratch. It's good to be a dawg!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful dogs!
ReplyDeletei looked for you last night. i liked the dog with the poofy hair, you know the one. ha ha ha
