The Saturday Seven: Interesting Facts About Color

Research has shown that the human eye can see at least 7,000,000 different colors; and some estimates go even higher. Some colors and color relationships can irritate our eyes, affect our attitude and perceptions, cause headaches, and wreak havoc with what we see. Yet there are other colors and combinations that have a positive effect, and can be soothing. Color can also improve productivity, reduce visual fatigue, and relax the body. This brings me to another scintillating edition of:
The Saturday Seven: Interesting Facts About Color
1. Women were more likely than men to have a favorite color.

2. Viewing a color may evoke a variety of sensations. Green may evoke the smell of grass, lemon yellow, a sour taste. Seeing the color yellow-green may cause taste sensations of sourness; pink may evoke sweetness. Seeing the color grey can even evoke the smell of smokiness.
3. Colors can cause fatigue, increase stress, decrease visual perception, affect the quality of our eyesight, and negatively affect orientation and safety.
4. Color helps us to process and remember images more efficiently than black and white scenes.
5. Ads in color are read up to 42% more often than the same ads in black and white
6. Yellow, pure bright lemon yellow is the most fatiguing color. Babies cry more in yellow rooms, couples fight more in yellow rooms, and opera singers throw more tantrums in yellow dressing rooms.

7. Blue is considered an appetite suppressant. Weight loss plans suggest putting your food on a blue plate, or even a blue light in your refrigerator to reduce temptation once you open the fridge.
And to close, here are the most common color associations:

  2. I had to comment today. I can't concentrate on the story of a black and white movie because the whole time I'm watching it, I'm trying to guess what color everything is. It drives me nuts. Thanks for this info today...back to cleaning, I must go....

  5. ... and on top of everything you share about colors, there are colors we, humans who have never been in space, have never even seen. Astronauts talk about gorgeous, undescribable colors of a beauty that mesmerizes...
    Cheers!

  6. When I was in interior design school (late 1980s), my color instructor told us never to paint psych ward walls green, as green was considered an anxiety-producing color, and to never hang abstract art on the wards' walls.

    My, how things change...

  8. Blue is my least favorite color. I refuse to have any part of my house decorated in blue. I've been a red(burgandy)girl for a few years now. Maybe it has something to do with my newfound inner independence? Or maybe I've turned into a control freak!? lol! ;)

  13. Me, I'm for color. Always have been. Only problem now though is, we just painted our bedroom yellow. Will this mean my better half and I will start arguing? I must bring this issue to the attention of Dr Wang, Psychic Betta Fish. He will know what to do.

  15. I've been meaning to comment on this since last week, so here goes. We studied colours in my commmunications class and learned that shades of blue give a product more credibility because it is a pure, clean, fresh colour.

I am attracted to shades of blue-green. At university, one my roommate pointed out all the blue and green bathroom/toiletries/cosmetics that lined my shelves! Not only the packaging of Biotherm, Origins, Clinique, and Nivea, but the products themselves - green tea, bamboo, seaweed and samphire, and so on...

But i have also read that green rooms make babies cry.

  16. Interesting post. Color always was a great science experiment in my science classes. This post reminds me of my college days when we would be on the road with the football team and play at University of Iowa where the visitors' locker room was always painted pink. Although never scientifically proven, Iowa always claimed the teams didn't play as good when they were in girly-looking locker rooms. It didn't work for them that year. :-)
