Since today is Father's Day here in the United States, I thought I'd work that into the blog in some fashion, but with a twist. And so, today I present The Sunday Art Review: Our Founding Fathers. They were a brave group of men with a vision and passion for a better way of life. They were energized, idealistic and well intended. They were not perfect, but who among us is? They did however, draft a document that launched a new nation and initiated intellectual discussion on how to establish and spread liberty. Both individually and as a group, our founding fathers were quite wise and insightful in their writings. One of my favorite sentences from the Declaration of Independence is as folows: "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It was pure genius, and is art in and of itself. With each portrait included in today's Sunday Art Review, I have included a quote from each of these Founding Fathers:
above: Benjamin Franklin: "Be in general virtuous, and you will be happy."
Above: George Washington: "There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth and pursue it steadily"
above: John Adams: "Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclination, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."
above: Samuel Adams: "Mankind are governed more by their feelings than by reason"
above: Thomas Jefferson: "Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle."

I'll tell you, those boys were tough. They knew how to grab life by the horns, form an entirely new nation!, and go for it. Lots of lessons we could learn from them. Happy Founding Father's Day!

Fantastic men. I love the way they expressed themselves, their amazing minds and intellects, their true ideals. I wish more people could bypass the non-PC elements of the 18th century, and see them as heroes today - we are in an age of severe hero shortage...
