Sunday Art Review: Palm Springs Mid Century Modern

Today I'm adding a new weekly feature called Sunday Art Review. It's not a review in the true sense of the word- I'm not professionally critiquing or evaluating any work, nor do I profess to have any specialized knowledge of art. It's just me presenting various works of art that seem interesting to me. For today, I thought I'd take you on a free-ride today, with a quick review of some retro mid-century modern art. There was a great deal of art that was inspired by the desert climate and the Palm Springs lifestyle. It was a time when life was a "gas", and people had a swingin' good time! Even today, days are spent lounging poolside, followed by a hip and groovy evening with martinis at the club. Whether you are a Hollywood movie star, or just an everyday schmo, Palm Springs is still a hip place to relax and get away from it all. I hope these photos convey this very lifestyle.

Above: These are from the private collection of some friends here in Palm Springs. I call these "art with attitude", they are so much fun!

  1. Your blog constantly makes me want to go see all these places in person...Palm springs is definitely on the top of my list of places I want to explore (once I win the lottery....lol).

  2. I love this new section in your blot! I like everything related to art, but I do not know anything about this lifestyle you talk about and its relation to a specific region of the US therefore, it makes it so interesting to me! My favorite piece was the "Cocktails" poster: the colors, the shapes, and the attitudes in the characters tell many stories of a time when people spent more hours relaxing and having fun rather than being stressed about life in general. Very, very nice!

  5. Rick, those are awesome! Thanks for showing them. I love touring the galleries down on Palm Canyon once in a while, as I'm sure you do too. No doubt we'll cross paths in one of them someday.
