Dualing Elvis & Priscilla Presley Homes

Palm Springs is famous around the world for many things. Our desert paradise has nearly perfect weather year round, winter temps around 70, Spring and Fall in the 80's, and Summer in the 100's. With activities like golf, tennis, swimming, hiking, and horseback riding, there is plenty to do here. It is a short driving distance from Los Angeles, which during the Golden Age of Hollywood attracted famous singers, movie stars, directors, movie studio moguls and various members of the Hollywood elite. To this day, Palm Springs continues to see its share of Presidents, Royalty, and titans of the business industry vacation here in our lovely desert. It has been said "there are more stars in Palm Springs than stars in the sky" which is ridiculous of course, but it makes the point. Celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Elvis and Priscilla Presley to name a few are part of the celebrity lore that people still associate with Palm Springs. There are a few Celebrity tour groups that drive around the desert showing visitors the vacation get-away homes of the stars. Speaking of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, I thought I'd mention that there has been more excitement regarding their residences here in the past few years. There are two homes whose owners now promote as places Elvis and Priscilla spent time in Palm Springs. Both are accurate. It just depends on what type of experience you are seeking. One is the Elvis and Priscilla Presley Honeymoon Hideaway home, where they spent time after they were married. The other is a home Elvis actually owned and lived in, called the Palm Springs Elvis Estate. Neither home is a grand palatial estate. They look nothing like Elvis' Graceland home; but nevertheless they are places where Elvis and Priscilla spent time here in Palm Springs. There are plenty of Elvis fans who want the chance to spend a vacation living in the very place where Elvis walked. Luckily for those folks, these two homes offer that experience. Let's face it, you can't do that at Graceland. So Palm Springs is the next best option if you are a crazy Elvis fan.

The celebrities of today are very low-key when then visit Palm Sp
rings. Some stay at private home of a friend, others stay at a spa resort and enjoy the healing hot mineral waters of our desert. But many rent homes here, seeking a secluded, casual experience of being in a home where they won't be bothered by hotel staff or peering tourists. A new generation of celebrities are coming to the desert more frequently- perhaps some day those homes they rented or stayed in will be promoted as destinations to rent. Perhaps one day people can stay in the place where George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Zac Efron or Matt Damon stayed. You never know.

If you don't happen to care about celebrities and just want to experience the desert life in your own home experience, Palm Springs has a number of homes, condos and apartments available to rent. It's actually a good deal to rent a place for a week, month or longer while visiting. This is not a paid post, but two friends of mine operate businesses that rent homes here in Palm Springs:
Vacation Palm Springs
Beau Monde Villas
Whether you have a desire to sleep in Elvis' home, or just someplace where you can relax as if it were your own home, I hope you do consider visiting Palm Springs. Come and see why it continues to be a destination of choice.

One other note regarding Elvis- he continues to generate all sorts of excitement here.

The Saturday Seven: Most Popular Topics on This Blog

For me, blogging is a creative outlet. It is a hobby and a pleasant distraction that I primarily maintain for myself. I readily admit that it has morphed into a site that promotes Palm Springs by highlighting the many attractions and goings-on in our fair city, but still it remains just a hobby for me. I've endured my share of detractors-mainly limited to a few people who think I am completely self-absorbed because I write about myself. I think they are just jealous or insecure about themselves. But I digress. Anyway despite the fact that I maintain this blog for myself, I have enjoyed using Google Analytics to study traffic and visitors to my blog. It is a handy tool and quite interesting as well. I thought it might make for an amusing topic for my weekly Saturday Seven Series today to list the most popular, traffic driving topics on my blog. Some may surprise you. So here goes. I am pleased to present another scintillating edition of The Saturday Seven: Most Popular Topics On This Blog:

#1 "Priscilla Presley and Elvis in Palm Springs" continues to be the number 1 most popular topic that brings people to my blog.

#2 Celebrities and the Palm Springs Film Festival are a major attraction.

#3 Surprising as it may seem, the topic of Ascots, or Cravats is the third most popular topic that brings visitors! To this day I continue to receive e-mails from enthusiastic men who want to learn more about wearing ascots. Who knew!

#4 I've blogged about Cesar Millan numerous times, which continue to attract visitors to the site

Dinner with Cindy Crawford

Saturday evening I attended the 10th Annual Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards Gala in Palm Springs. Supermodel Cindy Crawford was this year's honoree. Cindy was honored for her devotion to leukemia charities, particularly to help sick children of poor families. This photo (at left) is Cindy holding her Rick Weiss Humanitarian Award.

The Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards raise over a million dollars a year for charities such as Project New Hope, the Desert AIDS Project, American Heart Association, Guide Dogs of the Desert, the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Shelter from the Storm Battered Women's Center, Project Angel Food and many other groups as well. There are a number of charitable fundraisers in the Palm Springs area each year. For example, in just three years, Palm Springs area residents have raised $15 million to for a children's hospital, so while these Awards Galas sometimes seem glitzy, they do raise a great deal of money. The cost of producing these events are typically underwritten by corporate sponsors, so most of the money does reach the charitable organizations.

Our Congresswoman Mary Bono-Mack also attended the dinner, but I didn't bother Mary for a photo.
Details of the Gala Dinner...

Previous Award Honorees:
Without a doubt, we have a number of big name celebrities in Palm Springs who help support all these charities. Here are a few that were honored by the Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards in the past:
2000: Suzanne Somers
2001: Leeza Gibbons
2002: Judith Light & Larry King
2003: Mary Hart & Magic Johnson
2004: Priscilla Presley & Sherry Lansing
2005: Eric McCormack & Sidney Poitier
2006: Berry Gordy, Jon Shestack & Portia Iversen
2007: William Shatner & Sharon Stone

Relaxing after the Gala...

Elvis & Priscilla Presley's Palm Springs Connection

I'm never seen the TV show Dancing with the Stars, but one of the stars on the current season has a connection to Palm Springs. Priscilla Presley has a fabulous history here in the desert. Priscilla is an actress, producer and successful business entrepreneur. She was, of course married to music legend, Elvis Presley. She has made a fortune when she founded Elvis Presley Enterprises, and through her own product lines as well.

Priscilla's acting career has included a prominant role as a regular on the TV series Dallas, she also made guest appearances on TV's Melrose Place, Touched by an Angel, and Spin City. She also starred in the hit film series The Naked Gun. Priscilla is the executive producer of the film Finding Graceland and the film version of her autobiography called "Elvis and Me".

Elvis & Priscilla Presley's Palm Springs Home

While it's hard to believe, this week marks the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. For those of you who are Elvis fans, I thought you might be interested in this recent development. It seems that Elvis' former home in Palm Springs is about to be developed into a tourist attraction. A local couple bought Elvis' house with plans to restore it. They intend for it to become a mini-Graceland of California. Elvis and Priscilla Presley bought the home in April 1970 and lived there part-time with Lisa Marie Presley.
The Elvis connection to Palm Springs started back in May 1967, when newlyweds Elvis and Priscilla spent their honeymoon in Palm Springs and fell in love with the desert. Photo: Priscilla and Elvis Presley after their wedding on May 1st 1967.

I'll keep you all posted as there are new developments with the Elvis house. For more information, you can check out this site.
