A Time to Be Thankful...

There is plenty for which to be thankful. Fortunately I am blessed to be able to say there are more reasons than I have time to type up here today, and for that I am grateful. I am quite aware that today there are many people who feel as though they have nothing to celebrate and give thanks. So for that reason I decided to give thanks in solitude today, to my Creator, in the early hours of Thanksgiving day.

So for the rest of the day, here on this blog I'd like permission to be flip. Here's another reason to be thankful. Brad Pitt. Not only is he dashing and fit, he is also generous, down to earth and a genuinely nice guy too. So I'll give thanks here for Brad Pitt today. Let's hope he comes back to Palm Springs again soon, it would be nice to see him again. Happy Thanksgiving all.

Now how about you? Finish this sentence: I'm thankful for...

A Few Words About Palm Springs

Being the Palm Springs Savant, I receive a lot of e-mails from people across the US and from around the world asking all sorts of questions about Palm Springs. Usually they ask about visiting the desert, my favorite restaurants, famous people I know, and where to go sight-seeing of celebrity homes. I often tell people that one of the reasons famous people have been coming to Palm Springs for years is to escape the spotlight. Many celebrities still come to our desert and stay in a private home, or sequester themselves in exclusive boutique hotel in the area. Whenever I've taken someone famous out to dinner in Palm Springs, they are always relieved when locals allow them to relax and enjoy their dinner in peace. Our desert valley offers serene mountain views, natural beauty and wonderful dry warm weather. Whether you soak in the minerals of a natural hot spring, or partake in a healing mud bath at a local spa, you can really appreciate all our desert has to offer. It's no wonder we see the top stars of Hollywood visiting our city. I've had the pleasure of spending time with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, Brad Pitt, Paula Abdul, Linda Blair, Vanessa Hudgens, Sean Penn, Dick Van Patten, Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Willis and many others. Whether I've spent a weekend, a dinner or just a cocktail, the one common thing I have heard from all these people is how relaxed they feel in Palm Springs. I couldn't agree more. Except I didn't need a celebrity to tell me what I already knew. I hope you have an opportunity to visit our beautiful desert someday. And if you do, you know who to call.

Home Sweet Home for the Holiday Weekend

Well thankfully it's Friday, and the start of a nice long holiday weekend. I plan to relax at the homestead and just enjoy some quiet time. Fortunately the lawn has filled in nicely this summer, so I don't have to worry about doing any gardening this weekend. I suppose after the first day of doing nothing I'll be ready for some excitement. Maybe if I'm lucky one or two celebrity friends will drop by to say hello. For example, wouldn't it be interesting if Brad Pitt and George Clooney stopped by for a martini, all dressed up in their tuxedos? I mean, it could happen. They both love Palm Springs and enjoy getting away from the prying media and paparazzi. I'd better stock up on their preferred brand of vodka and get the martini shakers ready just in case they do show up. As Bee would say, I think my fish oil pills are kicking in so I probably should end this fanciful post here. This is one of those entries that fulfills the subtitle of this blog: "From the sublime to the ridiculous. Some fact and some fiction" . Fact or Fiction? You Decide.

Palm Springs Tennis Club Resort

One of my favorite spots in town is the Palm Springs Tennis Club, situated downtown, in the foothills of the San Jacinto mountain. It is a beautiful resort with lush gardens, a lavish pool area and wonderful tennis courts. It is also the home of Spencer's Restaurant at the Mountain, a popular dining establishment with the locals. The tennis club and restaurant attracts it share of rich and famous celebrities, such as Brad Pitt, Queen Latifah, Halle Berry, George Clooney and Andre Agassi. Back in January I hosted the private lunch reception for Dick Van Patten when he received his star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. That same day Carol Channing was on site for a fundraiser dinner where she was the guest of honor. Part of it's popularity may be that it is private and secluded away from photographers or the general public.

Matt Damon Monday

I have designated today as Matt Damon Monday, even if it is just for one day. What the heck, it's my blog. Hope you enjoy these photos I pilfered from around the web in a shameless attempt to attract new visitors to my blog. One day in the near future I hope to post some photos of Matt Damon taken from my own camera. I have a habit of meeting some interesting people, so stay tuned...

Above: Wow it's Matt Damon. Hey is it hot in here, or is it just me?

Above: Matt Damon from The Departed and the "Bourne" series

Above: Matt Damon, George Clooney and Brad Pitt from Oceans 13
Thanks for stopping by to checkout Matt Damon. I wonder if I used the name Matt Damon enough times here to increase ranking of the Matt Damon searches on the web.

Oceans 13

Saturday night we went to see "Oceans 13", starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ellen Barkin, Al Pacino, Andy Garcia, & Bernie Mac. Danny Ocean (George Clooney) pulls the crew together to seek revenge on a hotel owner Willy Banks (Al Pacino) for having screwed Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould). In order to enjoy this film, you need to suspend disbelief and allow for some creative license. Once you get past that, just sit back and thoroughly enjoy the movie. Brad Pitt and Matt Damon are hot as ever. The story line was good, although at times it seemed like there were quite a few mini subplots to support the story. I think this was better than Oceans 12, but I still like Oceans 11 the best of the series.

Brad Pitt and Matt Damon are looking GREAT

Sonny Bono Star Rededication on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars

On Saturday, a rededication ceremony was held for the Sonny Bono star along the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in downtown Palm Springs. For those of you under 25, Sonny & Cher had a successful singing and TV career back in the 60's and 70's. The star was originally installed in 1996 while Sonny was still mayor of Palm Springs. His widow, Congresswoman Mary Bono, left, and children Chianna Bono and Chesare Bono were on hand for the rededication. There were a number of dignitaries who made speeches, and former wife Cher recorded a message as well. Sonny's star is in front of Sonny's bronze statue, located on Mercado Plaza at 155 S. Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs.

As Palm Springs Savant, it's my obligation to periodically provide information about this great desert oasis. The Palm Springs Walk of Stars is a great place to discover the many Hollywood Stars who lived, loved and played in Palm Springs.

Back in the 1920's and 30's, stars such as Ruby Keeler, Al Jolson, William Powell, Rudolf Valentino and Harold Lloyd started the escape from Hollywood to the desert.

In the 40's they were soon followed by Ralph Bellamy, Charlie Farrell, Shirley Temple, Buddy Rogers, Mary Pickford, and Gene Autry.

The 50's and 60's were very definitely its heyday, when celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Lana Turner, Bob Hope, Rock Hudson, Ginger Rogers, Jane Wyman, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Lucielle Ball & Desi Arnaz, Liberace, George Montgomery, Dinah Shore all had homes here in Palm Springs.

The 70's, 80's and 90's brought stars including Shirley MacClaine, Sonny Bono, Merv Griffin, Dolly Parton, Jack Jones, Keeley Smith, Debbie Reynolds, Kaye Ballard, Buddy Greco, Carol Channing, George Lopez, Dick Van Patten, Connie Stevens, Rich Little, Suzanne Somers, Victoria Principal, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.
Today, in 2007, Palm Springs continues to attract big names, including Brad Bitt & Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Barry Manilow, Queen Latifah, Bill Mahr, and Ryan Seacrest. The annual Palm Springs International Film Festival attracts a huge roster of major motion picture actors, directors, writer and producers. It's not uncommon to see a major celebrity at a local restaurant one evening in town. With scenery and views like these below, its not hard to understand why Palm Springs has been home to celebrities for more that 80 years now. It's a beautiful oasis that I am proud to call home.

Palm Springs Film Fest Awards Gala

This evening I attended the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala, held at the PS Convention Center. The black tie affair was a major star-studded event attended by many Hollywood celebrities, dignitaries, and the Palm Springs Elite. There were limos as far as the eye could see, with mobs of onlookers, throngs of press and papparazzi and reporters along the red carpet. Entertainment Tonight was on the red carpet interviewing celebrities as they made their way into the Awards Gala.

The gala event had over 1,800 guests for cocktails, dinner and the awards show. Among some of the celebrities I saw were: Sissy Spacek, Kate Winslett, Valerie Harper, Connie Stevens, Morgan Freeman, Laurence Fishburne, Cate Blanchett, JoBeth Williams, Alan Arkin, Syndey Pollack, Brad Pitt, Adam Beach, Sienna Miller, Kaye Ballard and Mary Hart.

Oh-My-God, Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt Oh-My-God...

Here is an article from The Desert Sun:
Big names, big night for Palm Springs Film Festival
The Desert Sun
January 6, 2007
This one was big.
The Palm Springs International Film Festival’s signature event, Saturday night’s black tie awards gala, was so big, the Palm Springs Convention Center had to open an extra ballroom to accommodate the record 1,800 people. Most of them paid $300 to walk down a red carpet with more major stars than the desert has seen since Elvis, Sinatra, Hope and Crosby lived in the community.
Big stars like honorees Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Sydney Pollack and Brad Pitt were there.Film composer and Oingo Boingo leader Danny Elfman called Philip Glass “the only composer who I consider a major influence who isn’t dead.” Even the presenters were big stars, including Morgan Freeman, who made a surprise appearance to introduce director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Chairman Emeritus Harold Matzner called it “a big win for the city.”The city of Palm Springs is the major sponsor of what it calls its flagship tourism event, an event that not only fills hotels, but hair salons, formal attire stores, dry cleaners and limousines.
Fans praised the event, even those who were among the dozens who left after Pitt appeared on stage. Laura Cannon of Indio called it “amazing getting to see everybody.”But this gala will be remembered as an ensemble event, one in which Pitt just happened to be a memorable cast member.
As emcee Mary Hart of “Entertainment Tonight” noted, this was the first time the festival presented two ensemble awards.Writer/actor/director Jon Favreau, of “Elf” and “Swingers” fame, presented the new Chairman’s Vanguard Award for a film made on a limited budget to an ensemble from “Little Miss Sunshine” that included actor Alan Arkin and child star Abigail Breslin. Arkin called making the family comedy, “a completely loving, joyous experience from beginning to end.”
Almost an hour later, Pitt, Blanchett, Rinko Kikuchi and Adriana Barraza accepted the Ensemble Performance Award for the international cast of “Babel.”Pitt, attending without his high-profile companion, Angelina Jolie, jumped in first and joked about how the title “Babel” is mispronounced around the world. But he said he was proud of the international cast, “which just tells me I’m grossly overpaid.”
Kikuchi was celebrating her birthday and that prompted the best line of the night from her“Babel” colleague, Blanchett.“I don’t speak Spanish or Japanese,” said the Oscar-winning Best Supporting Actress from “The Aviator.” I barely speak English. ... In honor of Rinko’s extraordinary performance, I’m not wearing any underwear.” That last part was a reference those who have seen the movie would understand.
With more than 300 media people attending, the gala gave an Oscar push to three films likely to earn Best Picture nominations. “Babel” also benefited from the resumption of a presentation of the Director of the Year Award, given to Mexican filmmaker Iñárritu.“Little Children,” another strong ensemble film under the direction of writer Todd Field, benefited from a Sonny Bono Visionary Award to Field and another Career Achievement Award to his box office draw, Winslet.
Congresswoman Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, who has played a behind-the-scenes role in the development of the festival since its beginning, introduced actress Sissy Spacek to present the Visionary Award to Field.Field then presented Winslet’s award, calling her an “immensely talented actor.”Winslet said the award was “overwhelming and I’m incredibly honored.” Then she read letters she wrote when she was 11 and more recently, after she had turned 31. The theme of both was she always wanted to be an actress.
The evening presented its first awards before Chairman Earl Greenburg even introduced Hart, a long-time friend who has a home in Palm Desert. Sienna Miller served the first Rising Star Award to Adam Beach, of “Flags of Our Fathers” fame, to go with the first course of salad.Miller presented the second Rising Star Award to Jessica Biel, who played against type in “The Illusionist,” as the salad plates were being removed.
The final award of the night, the Screen Actors Guild Foundation Patron of the Arts Award, went to Pollack. Laurence Fishburne called him “a Renaissance man,” in his presentation and the humble Pollack was a little embarrassed at receiving what he called a “virtue award.”But Pollack might have to endure the adulation one more day.
The SAG Foundation will honor Pollack again today in a private reception. The gala, which was a money-loser when a telecommunications company ran it as a corporate networking event in the 1990s, grossed an estimated $900,000, or $200,000 more than the record it set in 2006. The attendance was double than of just four years ago, when Lynn Redgrave and Stephen Frears were the top honorees.
