ASK DR WANG
This week’s letter is from Cornelia in Wheaton, IL.
Cornelia writes; Dear Dr Wang,

I love your column each week, and look forward to Wednesdays to print it and share it with my co-workers over morning coffee. I am writing about one of the bosses here in our office. One of the girls discovered he is having an affair with a woman from the office building next door. The trouble is that we are a small company, and we often have lunch with his wife every few weeks. We like her very much and feel guilty that we know her husband is cheating on her. Should we tell her what we know? We all agreed that we would want to know if it were one of us, but it is quite different since we work for her husband. It’s a mess, but I just don’t know what to do. What does your good fish wisdom see?

Cornelia

Dr Wang responds, Dear Cornelia,

This was much easier than I expected. The Great Bubble Wall was very clear with the answer. Your boss’s wife already knows that her husband is cheating on her. She has decided to live with it, to preserve her marriage and the convenience of their life. Interestingly, there were some heart-shaped bubbles, indicating that they still love each other in some way. My suggestion is to stay out of the situation and do not mention the other woman to her at all. However, there is something far worse he is hiding from his wife. It appears he has a child from another woman who is now a teenager. And needs money for her education. This will present issues for his wife when there is a sudden reduction in cash as he pays his secret daughter's tuition. You will discover this when she visits her father at the office in a few weeks. You can innocently mention to the wife how delightful her daughter is the next time you see her. This will tip her off, since the only child she has with your boss is a son.

It will take her by surprise, but she will be grateful for this knowledge.

Keep Swimming Upstream,
-Dr Wang

Wisdom Wednesdays: Featuring Dr Wang & Madame Esmerelda

DR WANG & Madame Esmerelda

Now back from his cruise, Dr Wang is once again leading off his weekly Wisdom Wednesdays column with special-guest Gypsy fortune teller Madame Esmerelda, who is still in Palm Springs for another two weeks. ASK DR WANG
This week’s letter is from an anonymous man who reports to be currently serving a prison sentence in the state of Louisiana. He writes:
Dear Dr Wang,

I am currently serving out the last few months of a three year prison term for a non-violent, white collar crime for which I am guilty. I am serving my time, and paying my debt to society as they say. I am at a strange point however in that when I am released I do not know what I will do with my life.. With my imprisonment, my wife divorced me, I lost my house, my friends and my career. Without divulging my identity, I am not allowed to pursue the same career I previously held. I have nothing to lose by writing to a psychic fish, so this is it. What do you see in my future? I have limited internet access so I hope you can respond promptly.

-Anonymous, in prison.

Dr Wang responds: Dear Anonymous,
This is a very interesting letter, and a most unusual one for me to tackle. I spent a fair amount of time meditating in my Ancient Temple for you. The Great Bubble Wall was quite revealing in that the pattern and flow of bubbles suggest that you will eventually be living near the ocean and will open a pizza place. I suggest that you use the name “Pizza Shack”, except put your first name in front of it. (ie: Sidney’s Pizza Shack”). There you will meet a woman by the name of either Debbie, Dina or Darlene who will create a unique recipe for lasagna that will make your restaurant famous in the town. This will eventually lead you to change the name to "_____'s Pizza and Pasta Shack", which will eventually grow into three locations. Please, for me and the sake of my other aquatic cousins, resist the temptation to feature any seafood on you menu. I think it’s a crime to eat fish. And you don’t want to be guilty of another crime! Good luck serving out your sentence, and be sure to drop me a line when you get your feet on the ground.

Keep swimming upstream,
-Dr Wang

ASK DR WANG, the psychic betta fish
This week’s letter is from Milton, in Boise, Idaho.
Dear Dr Wang,

For most of my life I have led a very simple life, barely making ends meet, living off the land and doing hard seasonal work whenever I could get it. About ten years ago I married a woman I really don’t love, but we are companions and it saves money living together. Our love life is mechanical, with barely any lust at all. But I have not asked for, or expected more out of life-until now.

I’ve just inherited a substantial sum of money from an uncle in North Dakota who left his estate to my parents, who are now deceased. I had no idea how well-off my uncle was; I always assumed he just had a bunch of farm land and a barn. The situation is that I want to leave my wife, move away from Idaho, and start a new life with all this money. My wife does not handle the finances, so she has no idea about the money I have inherited. I am thinking of just paying off the mortgage, giving her the house, and calling things even. Since we never had anything together anyway except a house with a mortgage I figure she would be making out OK. I really don’t think she will be torn up about a divorce, so I don’t expect any crocodile tears.

What should I do? What do you see in my future?

Very kindly yours,
Milton

Dr Wang responds: Dear Milton,

You must be very careful with how you handle this situation, a misstep will damage your karma and leave you will a run of bad luck that will haunt you for many years. I suggest having a very honest conversation with your wife about how you are feeling about your marriage.

After swimming through The Great Bubble Wall for nearly an hour, I decided I needed further reflection. I swam down to the depths of my tank to meditate in the Ancient Temple, with guidance from Mini-Booda. (Please remember that being a betta fish I am unaware of any local or state laws in Idaho regarding the division of property within divorce proceedings. You should consult an attorney for those matters). However, I suggest you tell her that your uncle has passed, leaving you his property and estate. If you feel strongly about wanting a divorce, do so quickly and do not make her life miserable. You should be generous in your divorce settlement-do more than the Idaho law requires you to do, and I’ll leave it at that.

We have a saying in the underwater world that I think applies to your life at the moment: “It’s better to be lost in the turbulent deep waters than to be resting calmly in a fish net”. Interpret that as: "go for it".

Regarding your future, it is quite colorful! You are going to move to Las Vegas, purchase a condo and work in a casino as a card dealer. Your pit boss at the casino is a midget with red hair. Be careful with this man, he has a short temper to match his height. While working at the casino, you will meet a showgirl who goes by the name “Sweetie”; she will dazzle you with her feathers and sequins. Get to know her, your relationship will add some much needed spice to your life.

Good luck with all the changes.
Keep Swimming up stream
-Dr Wang

This week’s letter is from JD, in Palm Springs, California. JD writes:

Dear Dr Wang,

I’m a regular reader of Rick’s blog and been following your column for nearly a year. I think I am the first person from Palm Springs to write in for your wisdom. I moved to the desert four years ago after having accepted an early retirement package from a high pressure job at a large company. I am fortunate not to have to work for a living anymore, so I keep myself busy golfing, gardening and volunteering at all sorts of events. My social life is great, but I am still single and tend to meet other people already in relationships. I am hardly a hermit, but I’m not one to hang out at a bar to meet someone. What do you suggest and what’s in my future?

Healthy, Wealthy, and but not so wise,
JD

Dr Wang responds: Dear JD,

You are correct, after reviewing the underwater archives, you are the first person from Palm Springs to write in! Your query is quite interesting, as you left off several details about yourself, and did not indicate your lifestyle, perhaps to retain some anonymity, which I understand. So I will work with what you have offered-I hope you write back in a month or two and let me know how accurate I am. As I swam past The Great Bubble Wall, a ray of afternoon sunlight caused a “rainbow effect" on the bubbles, suggesting that you are probably gay. At least you are living in the right town. Indeed, you are quite fortunate in life and it seems about to become luckier.

The social things you have been doing are not putting you in contact with anyone on a regular basis. You need to do something that will put you in the same place predictably for a period of time. That way if someone likes you they know where to find you again. I am glad to hear you are not a bar barnacle, there is nothing more pathetic than a person sitting in a bar drinking like a fish day after day. Leave that to me and my fellow aquatic acquaintances!

I foresee you working part-time in a local gallery, where you will have the opportunity to meet some very worthwhile and cultured men. Before the new year, you will meet someone of interest.

For some reason I see you moving into a new house in early 2008. It is one of the former homes of crooner Frank Sinatra. Be careful when you do any renovations to the interior walls. The house is haunted by he ghost of Ava Gabor. Her ghost will provide hours of entertainment for you before she is finally released when you uncover a gold framed vanity mirror hidden behind a wall that a prior owner built over rather than remove. The mirror was used by Miss Gabor and was her favorite. You and your new “friend” will eventually host an “Ava Gabor film party” at your home. Good luck, and have fun.
In the meantime, keep swimming upstream.
-Dr Wang

ASK DR WANG, the psychic betta fish

This week's letter is from Debbie in Seattle, WA. Debbie writes:

Dear Dr Wang,

My younger sister has recently revealed to me that she is a lesbian. This came as a complete shock, I was completely unaware of Donna's interests. My first reaction was to tell her I loved her and it made no difference. I have no problem with her being gay, but I feel a little hurt that she hid it from me for so long. I'm also a disappointed in myself that I was (apparently) so distant that I missed this major aspect of her life. Should I confront her about why she neglected to tell me this until now? And what should I do next? Do I share this information with the rest of the family? I am so confused about my role in this. Also, what do you see for my future?

Regards, Debbie

Dr Wang responds: Dear Debbie,

First of all, you should be commended for expressing your love and support to your sister. However you need to know that this is not about you. This is your sister's lifestyle, and her decision to come out to you. Do not feel guilty or confuse this with anything you have done (or have not done). As far as what you should do next, I'd say NOTHING, without asking Donna first. Ask her if she needs your help in speaking to other members of the family-if not all you need to do is be a good sister.

As far as your future, I was not clear what you wanted to know, but I swam past The Great Bubble Wall several times to pick up a vibe or two about your future. The bubbles were particularly turbulent and active, indicating a stormy couple of weeks ahead for you. You have two problem people in your life: a workman (possibly a carpenter?) who is taking shortcuts on a project he is doing in your home, and also your baby sitter is stealing your underwear. You need to fire both of them before the next full moon. The good news is your sister Donna's girlfriend is very handy with tools and can watch your kids too.

Keep swimming upstream,

-Dr Wang
