With the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday this past week, I found myself drawn back to a post I did on July 15, 2007 that included a visit to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. As I re-read that post I was reminded of the awesome presence and impression it had on me that day. I started thinking how amazing it is that a statue made of cold, hard materials could convey such emotion and warmth. For some reason, it became the inspiration for this week's Sunday Art Review: Statues Galore. I dug up a series of photos I had taken recently of statues that had not yet been included in a previous post here. And so without much fanfare, I present a small collection of statues for your enjoyment.

The first time I saw Lincoln's Monument, I wanted to crawl up and sit in his lap. I still do.
for some reason the serenity woman appeals to me. I just like the curvacious look I guess!
Whoa, that first photo reminds me of the end of Planet Of The Apes, not the old one but the remake, where Mark Wahlberg crashes on the stairs of the memorial and looks up to see "APEraham Lincoln".. whoa, man! Trippy! It's like, they have the same history we do but they're all monkeys! So that statue is a monkey and he's not wearing any shoes!
Aphrodite is by no means my favorite of the Greek gods but she is my favorite of your Sunday statues. I like the classic stuff :)
I know when I saw The Licoln Memorial for the first time it brought me to tears, as I am sure it does for many people. Vesides being a truly GREAT Scykpture--because it captured the Humanity of the man....I know I was moved too by the entire building and the Statue'sw location---AND, it's because of who Lincoln was, for me.
I so wish you would tell us the names of the Artists Rick...It's the one thing I so miss in your truly WONDERFUL Sunday Art Posts!

I, too, love classical sculpture, but am always open to new things. I think the piece that moves me the most is The Pieta.
the last one is my favorite, kew garden one. reminds me of zeus.

The big puffy statues look like they're by Fernando Botero. You should see his paintings too.
My fave of course is the classical Aphrodite.
I have yet to visit the Lincoln Memorial up close (I have some long shots from my last visit). Doubtless when I do you will see it on my blog.
