An Interesting Event This Sunday

This Sunday I have been invited as a special guest to attend the "Same Sex in The City: Wedding Show", geared primarily toward same-sex couples. As a reminder, this is not a paid post, and I make no apologies for this topic. As many of you know I generally avoid controversial topics for my blog. Admittedly I am a bit of an enigma to some. Consider that I use all of the following terms to describe me: Moderate-Conservative, Episcopalian, Gay, Business Executive, Wine Connoisseur, Eco-Friendly, Organic-Advocate, Society Writer, Raconteur and Ever-So-Modest. So why I am writing about an event that showcases gay wedding planning services? Well for two reasons: first, I believe in the right for all people to marry the person they love, and second, because this is my blog. Now that is out of the way, let me tell you more about Sunday's event.

In a nutshell, it is an expo offering guests access to professional wedding planners with a variety of ideas around design, photography, catering, cake design, fashion, & travel plans. Let's face it, gay people usually have high disposable income and love a good party, so capitalism being what it is, the wedding planning industry has emerged with gay-friendly wedding planners. The event is being hosted by GBK Productions, a firm well known in Hollywood for its celebrity special events. GBK is also holding a drawing for a grand prize to win $10,000 in wedding services. For my local readers, the event is Sunday September 7th at the Parker Palm Springs Hotel. For more information please visit SameSexinTheCity or e-mail Carla for tickets. I am pleased to be attending as an invited guest and will probably write about the event again next week with some highlights. Happy Friday to you!

I worked in the wedding industry in the early 1990s... man, it's changed since then.

I can't wait to hear how it went.

what a great idea! I'm not gay but I would go to the event in a heartbeat---my closest friends are gay--matter of fact, how's this for awesome: A female rabbi at a local temple near our town (TOWN TEMPLE IS IN IS LOMBARD), she's gay, married and has a 4 year old boy.
I admire her and she is some amazing speaker--and I'm a Christian.

Got off the point, but back to the comment, I hope you enjoy yourself and I do hope you're comfortable posting about the event in it's aftermath because A) you should and B) it's your blog so screw those that judge

but don't listen to me, I'm just a stay at home mom.

Have a great time! Should be fun and any info would be great. I hope they have these venues and store operations out here, it would be a nice thing for partners that are ready to take the next step in their relationship.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth

If I lived in Palm Springs rather than NJ I would get my heterosexual, middle-aged married ass over to the Parker on Sunday in support. But since I'm geographically unavailable, I hope you post lots of info about this event here on your little old blog. Those who don't like the idea, don't have to read about it.
My best, - Sharon in NJ -

i like that you don't fit into a lot of people's preconceived notions. probably because i don't either. and it's your space to address whatever topic you'd like to address in whatever manner you'd like. i do so appreciate that you keep a positive tone though. :)

have fun!

i agree rick. and although i am conservative, on lots of social issues i lean a little left! so like you, i think any two like minded people should be able to marry. i went to a gay wedding back in 1981! sounds like a lovely event to me!

Wait.. you're gay? I gathered from your last post that only cucumbers and tomatoes should be allowed to marry! NOW you're advocating that same-sex vegetables can consummate a relationship?

Just so you know, I'm not a vegaphobe.. I believe in equal rights for all. Especially after finding out that the cucumber and the tomato are named "Larry and Bob".

I think people who defy stereotypes are far more interesting! Although it is easier to explain sometimes, like when people say, "so you stay home with your kids" I say, "yes, but not exactly..." but usually it's just easier to say YES.

A dear friend from high school is a gay Republican. He loves that it totally messes with people's heads that such a combination exists.

I'm a pretty conservative person but anyone who knows me, you included, know I am a tolerant person and I am glad you were confident in that when we met. Live and let live, I say. As long as you're happy and contribute to the well-being of those around you, which you are and do.

Anyway, I wish I could go to events like that.

To Princess Bee : Wow, that couple marrying in 1981 were proper pioneers. What was the wedding like taking place so long ago?

Dear Mr. Rick,
How is Owen? I saw his photo on your sidebar and he looks like he got a fur-cut!

Wait...you're EPISCOPALIAN?!?! Who knew?

*grin*

I think gays have every right to be married, and I would attend this event just to see how wedding trends have evolved.
