Wisdom Wednesdays: Featuring Dr Sidney Wang

ASK DR WANG
This week's e-mail comes from a reader named Iris from Syossett, NY. Iris writes:

Dear Dr Wang,
I'm going to give this a whirl, I figure writing to a psychic fish can’t be any worse than all the money I've already shelled out to the gypsy fortune teller in the city. So here goes: I am bored to tears in my job, even though it is safe and steady. What I really want to do is be a florist but I’m not sure I am adventurous enough to go out and start my own business. I have been saving money for years for this dream but now I am too scared to take the leap. What does the good doctor see in my future?

Stemming with ideas,
Iris G.
Syosset, NY

Dr Wang responds:

Dear Iris,

I am honored that you would write to me for such important advice. I have meditated at the base of The Great Bubble Wall in my tank to see what your future holds. It is in fact your destiny to be a florist. Having named you Iris at birth, your parents did not realize how appropriate your name would one day be. For you are about to embark on this new career which will ultimately prove successful, profitable and very rewarding. Unlike the plastic plants in my tank, you must specialize in fresh exotic flowers in your business. I see that there is a void in your town among the current flower shops. This will give you the competitive edge you need.

In your first year, you will acquire a significant customer of vast wealth, who will hire you to provide substantial floral arrangements weekly, as well as for the lavish parties he hosts at his home. This wealthy client will remind you of Truman Capote, and will invite you to many of the social events he hosts. You must attend, as you will meet other important clients, one of which will be your future husband.

Don’t delay in starting your business, but be sure you have completed a thorough business plan and budget.

Keep swimming upstream,

-Dr Wang

Great advice, Dr. Wang, about the business plan and budget. Might be a good idea if Iris took a couple of community college courses to learn the basics of flower arranging if he/she doesn't have a lot of experience.
