Wisdom Wednesdays: Featuring Dr Sidney Wang

ASK DR WANG the psychic betta fish

This week's letter is from Carol in Athens, NY. Carol writes:

Dear Dr Wang,
I am hoping that your readers don't laugh at my letter or think I'm foolish for writing this, but here goes. I live a very typical life of a housewife. I have two children, a boy and a girl. My husband "Sal" is an insurance salesman who makes a good living so I don't need to work. I spend my days looking after the children, keeping house and baking. I often makes pies or cakes for the school or church bake sale, or for neighbors now and then. I've received so much overwhelming positive feedback about my baking skills that I am beginning to think I could start a side business, baking at home for profit. I'm interested in your perspective on this before I even approach my husband with the idea. What do you see in my future?
Thanks, Carol, Athens, NY.

Dear Carol,
I am fascinated by your letter, my fish instinct tells me there is more to this than you let on. After consulting The Great Bubble Wall in my tank I have learned more about you and have insights to what the future holds for you. Let me start by acknowledging that being a housewife and full time mother is an important job, and I admire you for that. My own mom raised me from when I was just a fish egg and even though I fought with my brothers (as we Siamese fighting fish tend to do) my mother always took the time to teach us right from wrong. My mom always had a career of her own, she was a "hostess" in a way, providing transport for parasites. She enjoyed her line of work and made a decent living at it, all while being a full time mom.
Now, regarding your question about baking for profit. Let's be honest, you really don't know the first thing about baking. Your neighbors really don't like your cupcakes or pies. You have been hiding behind Betty and Duncan for years, and it will only take you so far. Bake for pleasure, but not for profit.
I sense that what's really at play is your deep desire for a career and some independence. The exceptionally large bubbles coming from The Great Bubble Wall indicate that your husband "Sal" has a very big ego, and does not want you to have your own career. You should speak with Sal about this and be very honest. The conversation will be unpleasant at first, but he will come around. The good news is that an opportunity will present itself within 12 days from your conversation. A woman by the name of Trixie who owns a photography studio will offer you a job when you take your kids for their holiday photos. Trust Trixie, she will take good care of you.
In the meantime, keep swimming upstream,
-Dr Wang
